It appears like Marvel loses right to user Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic universe. This comes after Sony pictures, and Disney failed to reach an agreement regarding future co-financing of the Spider-Man franchise.

Marvel loses rights to Spider-Man

The deadline indicated that the two companies reportedly failed to agree on terms regarding a 50-50 co-financing deal proposed by Disney. Sony on its part wanted the deal to go on as currently structured which gives Marvel 5% of first-dollar grosses on films.

This means that the Spider-man character will no longer appear in MCU films. Will also see Kevin Feige stop his input in Sony Spider-man films. Sony’s Spider-Man movies will now be created without the input of Feige who was behind the launch of the Tom Holland character.

Holland has featured in solo films Spider-Man: Homecoming and Spider-Man: Far From Home as well as the last two Avengers films. With Sony taking back Spider-Man it means Marvel Studios will not be using webslinger in ensemble movies. These include Avenger: Endgame and Captain America: Civil War.

Sony looking to develop its Spider-Man Movies

Sony had agreed to share rights to Spider-Man with Marvel. This is after its first two Spider-Man movies disappointed in 2012 and 2014. Since the partnership Sony has grown the franchise and its latest movies Spider-man: Far From Home was the highest-grossing movie with $1.1 billion. The movies surpassed James Bond’s movie, Skyfall.

Sony held the film rights for Spider-Man for quite some time now. Even though it is a Marvel comic property. Marvel’s president, Feige has been part of the success of creating a big-screen version of Spider-Man; that appeared on Sony solo films. It appears like Sony is building on the popularity of Spidey to develop its films like Morbius and Venom 2.

Despite MCU not holding rights for Spider-man, we could still see two new solo movies starring Holland and directed by Jon Watts from Sony. However, Marvel and Feige will not have any creative input on Spider-Man. The character will not appear in MCU films.
